There are people wondering how to manage items like camping gear or sports equipment—things that aren't useful right away but will be needed someday. 'How do I manage them?' For these people, 'storage subscription service', where you regularly pay money to store items in 'my own storage,' is said to be popular these days.

Reporter Lee Yoo-kyoung reports.

Kim Hyun-geun, who enjoys camping, stores his camping equipment in a private storage unit five minutes from home.

He uses a 2-meter by 2-meter space, which costs 150,000 won a month, but his family is happy now that the camping gear that filled the balcony is gone.

Kim Hyun-geun / Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province
"I leave my camping gear there with the feeling of returning it after camping ends, and if I need something to use at home, I come by whenever needed and use it. (Using the storage unit) all the stress related to space among family members and things like that disappeared."

In particular, as one-person households increase, urban self-storage services are gaining popularity.

Through such mobile apps, if you pay for a storage unit of the size you want, you can freely use your own storage 24 hours a day.

Items stored include not only sports and hobby gear but also seasonal clothing and more.

Kang Ji-hyun / One-person household
"At home, the elevator is small and the doorway itself is small, so moving things was quite difficult, but (using the storage unit) I think it's good in terms of space."

Rising housing costs, including Seoul's average monthly rent surpassing 1.5 million won, are also a reason people look for private storage.

Nam Seong-hoon / CEO of A urban storage company
"As living spaces get smaller, demand for storage is increasing rapidly, and as people spend more time on leisure activities, demand for a space of one's own is also growing quickly."

Recently, one construction company decided to introduce customized storage units for each household within an apartment complex.

Security is managed using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Choi Jin-wook / Team Leader at B urban storage company
"We are applying technologies that allow headquarters to remotely monitor and control temperature and humidity, fire, leaks, and security."

The self-storage market, now worth in the 200 billion won range, is expected to grow to the 2 trillion won range by 2034.
